VIDEO: How to Clean Your Glasses

Proper Frame and Lens Care

1. Rinse

Rinse your glasses regularly (not necessarily every day), especially after heavy sweating or use in salty environments such as the beach or on a boat.

2. Dry

After rinsing, dry immediately with a microfiber cloth or the glasses' storage pouch to prevent water spots or marks.

3. Inspect

Make sure the glasses are completely dry everywhere, especially in corners, hinges, and small grooves where water tends to collect unnoticed.

4. Air Dry

If any moisture remains, air dry fully before storing. Don't put the glasses straight into a case or pouch. For everyday use, leaving them in an open, well-ventilated spot is fine without a pouch.

5. Store (if storage is needed)

If you do store your glasses in a pouch or case, make sure both the glasses and the pouch are completely dry each time, to prevent moisture buildup and frame corrosion.

Additional Tips

A lens cleaner with a moderate amount of alcohol is fine to use on both lens and frame, since alcohol evaporates faster than water and reduces the chance of liquid pooling in corners.

Precautions

  • Avoid standing water: especially around the lens edges and hinges - wipe or blow dry completely before wearing or storing.
  • Don't wipe a dry lens: hard dust particles can easily scratch the lens surface. Rinse with water or spray lens cleaner first, then wipe dry.

Storing Your Glasses:

  • For everyday use:
    • After cleaning, let the glasses air dry in a well-ventilated spot; avoid putting them straight into the pouch.
    • There's no need to store them in a case - open-air drying is gentler on the metal than a confined, humid space.
  • For long-term storage:
    • Clean the glasses thoroughly and let them dry completely before storing, to reduce the risk from sweat residue and invisible moisture that can damage the finish and frame. Store in a case with silica gel to control humidity.

Notes

  • Never use dish soap to clean your glasses - surfactants can damage the lens.
  • Glasses that are worn and cleaned regularly last longer, since they aren't left sitting in humid storage.
  • If you wear your glasses regularly, consider replacing them every 2 years, since UV exposure degrades the lens over time. See the research
